Oct 31, 2006 · A36 is an carbon steel. HSS is, at best, the last resort for machining this mat'l. I'd use indexable carbide if you can. Several companies like Iscar or Sandvik can help. If you have to use HSS use slow SFM (40 or less) and medium feed rate of .006 or so for drilling opps. .375 dia. and above. Consult your machinery hand book for more info.

tips for turning ASTM A36 ? The Home Shop Machinist

A36 is mild steel with 60K PSI tensile strength. Agree though, it's the most common steel product produced. The rebar you get at the local home center is ungraded crap,it can be anything.

Cutting Speeds & RPM Calculations

A high speed steel "G" drill is being used prior to reaming a 3/8 hole on a piece of 1095 steel with a brinnel hardness of 300. Calculate the RPM setting to perform the drilling and reaming operations. Cutting Speed = 40 (fpm) Diameter of Cutter = 0.3701 (G drill) Half the speed for reaming would be = 432 / 2 = 216 RPM for reaming.
